Sažetak
Language development is strongly influenced by numerous biological and environmental factors. Early acquired brain lesions have an important place among many risk factors which can lead to language disorders. Relation between early brain injury and later child development is the focus of many research studies. While language delay in the early phase of language acquisition in children with focal lesions of left cerebral hemisphere is often reported, researches have come to different conclusions as regards later language development. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of prenatally or perinatally sustained focal brain lesions of left cerebral hemisphere on later neurodevelopmental and language development. Subjects of this study were 15 children aged between 1.5 and 12. Ischaemic or hemorrhagic brain lesion was diagnosed during early postnatal period by cranial ultrasound scan. All of the children are included in continuous neuropediatrics follow-up. Their neurological status has been regularly evaluated and assessed. Receptive and expressive language abilities were assessed by various language tests. The results were compared with normative data for the same chronological age. Different language aspects (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics) were assessed in order to get information about general linguistic level of each child. In preverbal children, the level of communicative competence was evaluated. Information on cognitive development have also been consider. Obtained results were analysed in relation to the following parameters: time when lesion occurred, type, size and site of lesion. The importance of acknowledging these parameters and of their influence on the processes of brain plasticity is discussed.
