Sažetak
Dye manufacturing is one of the sectors in chemical industry dealing with the greatest variety of products and intermediates unfriendly for environment. Organic synthetic dyes are also major pollutants in the wastewater produced from many industries related to textile, paint and varnishes, ink, plastics, pulp and paper, cosmetics, tannery etc. Although, the presence of colored wastewater in the environment might not always appear to have negative effect other than esthetic, such effluents pose a major threat to the surrounding ecosystem. Synthetic dyes are generally recalcitrant to biological treatment and remain in the biosphere, where they constitute a source of pollution due to both toxic and mutagenic effects on humans, fish, algae and microorganisms. Methods for dealing with dye wastewater consist of various biological, physical and chemical treatment methods that can be applied separately or combined. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are described as promising option to remove persistent pollutants from contaminated water when conventional water treatment processes are not efficient enough. AOPs as destructive types of water pollution removal processes eliminate polluting compounds rather than transfer them to another medium. In principle, AOPs are based on the generation of hydroxyl radicals (• OH) in water ; highly reactive and non-selective oxidant which can oxidize organic compounds, especially unsaturated organic compounds such as organic synthetic dyes. Ultraviolet (UV) driven AOPs are primarily based on the generation of • OH through the direct photolysis of hydrogen peroxide, ozone or through photo-induced processes as in photo-Fenton type reactions or photocatalysis. In this work several UV driven AOPs for treatment of model wastewater containing reactive dyes are discussed and compared. Process efficiency is estimated on the basis of decolorization and mineralization degree of model colored wastewater.
