Sažetak
Monitoring can provide early warning of any changes that could result in significant risk to individual species, populations and ecosystems. Evaluating environmental change involves monitoring plans that use indicator species and biomarkers of exposure and effects. Marine organisms have been recognized as a useful tool for monitoring of the environment because of their ability to accumulate chemical elements and compounds in their tissues. Mussels are commonly used as bioindicators because they have wide distribution on all continents. Bioaccumulation of bivalent metals and lipophilic organic compounds through extracting metals from water and particulate matter can lead to accumulation of species in contents above those in the abiotic environment. Chemical analyses of mussel tissues by different techniques are extremely helpful in biomonitoring. The aim of this study was: (i) to establish the analysis of the Mytilus galloprovincialis shell in biomonitoring ; (ii) to determine concentration of selected elements in the samples ; (iii) to compare obtained results with results from previous studies. Samples were collected in the February 2007 along the Croatian Adriatic coast. There were 17 samples from different coastal regions. Metal concentrations were determined in powdered shell samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Selected metals in this study were Al, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sr and Zn. Analytical procedure was based on total digestion of powdered shell samples. Standard referent material was used for the control of the analytical procedure. Results have shown that samples in vicinity of harbors, city waste or sewage, and chemical industry centers have certain level of contamination. It is shown that shell analysis can be used in determination of environmental status and also to assess possible anthropogenic influences.
