Sažetak
Water is one of the major ways of arsenic environmental transport and distribution. High concentration of arsenic in drinking water results from anthropogenic contamination or naturally occurring subsurface materials. Arsenic in drinking water results from geological composition of soil and anthropogenic activities. Arsenic represents a worldwide health concern because it has been identified as a toxic element and it can contribute to skin, bladder and other cancers. Over 200 000 people from Eastern Croatia consume drinking water with arsenic concentration over 10 μ gL-1. which represents the maximum contaminant level by the scientific knowledge and health concerns. The effective removal of arsenic from water may be achieved with the following techniques: adsorption on activated alumina and granular ferric hydroxide, activated carbon process, coagulation and filtration methods by ferric and aluminum salts, membrane treatment (reverse osmosis and nanofiltration), ion exchange, ect. Adsorption of arsenic (III) and arsenic (V) from water using cationic resin (Dowex Marathon C) and two natural zeolites: klinoptilolit (Donje Jelenje, Croatia) and manganese greensand (New Yersey, USA), were investigated. Natural zeolites and cationic exchange resin were saturated with Fe3+-ions from solution FeCl3 in acetate buffer solution (pH 3.6). The Freudlich and Langmuir isotherms were calculated for arsenic solutions with different concentrations treated on 25°C. Arsenic solutions were made by drinking water characteristic for Eastern Croatia (pH 7.4 and water hardness of 260 μ gL-1. CaCO3).
