Sažetak
This work presents the results of investigations on brucellosis in wild boar population and domestic swine in central part of Croatia over a five-year period (from 1996 to 2000) and in eastern part of Croatia during two-year period (from 2001 to 2002). In the regions of Zagreb, Velika Gorica, Sisak, Lonjsko Polje and Novska (central Croatia) 151 blood samples of the wild boars were serological tested and 34 sera (22.5 %) found to be positive. From the same regions blood samples of 901 domestic swine were taken and 122 samples (13.5 %) were established to be positive. In the regions of Nova Gradiška, Đakovo, Vinkovci and Osijek (eastern Croatia) the blood samples of 627 wild boars were analyzed and 157 samples (25.0 %) showed serologically positive reactions. In the same region the blood samples of 1080 domestic swine on pastures were also analyzed and positive serological reactions were determined in 133 samples (12.3 %). Most of the positive reactions were determined by iELISA (15.6 %), then by RBT (11.5 %), CFT (10.5 %) and SAT (9.9 %) or on average 11.8 %. Tissue samples from 35 wild boars and 156 domestic swine were also bacteriological analyzed and Brucella suis biovar 2 was identified in 10 wild boars (28.5%) and in 77 domestic swine (49.35 %). Based on the obtained results and considering the fact that in researched regions wild boar and domestic swine live on the same habitats, as well as wild boar show high reproduction potential which is responsible for rapid growth of their number, it could be concluded that in Croatia wild boars are natural reservoirs and vectors of B. suis biovar 2.
