Sažetak
The purpose of our retrospective study is to assess sex-based differences on incidence, risk factors, clinical presentation, hospital treatment and mortality after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The original database was made at the Department of Internal Medicine, General Hospital, Bjelovar, Croatia in the period between January 1998 and January 2001. All 297 patients (64% men and 36% women) admitted with a definitive diagnosis of AMI were studied. Women are more likely to have unfavourable risk characteristics, complications and are under-treatment with aspirin, thrombolytic therapy, beta-blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors what is contributing to worse in-hospital mortality after AMI. All patients admitted in hospital with AMI should be offered optimal medical treatment irrespective of sex and age.
