Sažetak
In Croatia pollutant concentrations due to stationary sources have significantly decreased between 1970 and 1980 mainly due to suptitution of coal for light oil and gas and introduction of district heating in large towns. The next marked decrease in air pollution occured after 1991 due to the destruction or cease of production of some major industrial plants due to aggression on Croatia. Vehicle emissions started to be a leading problem in urban areas (so far only 15 percent of cars have built in catalytic converter). However, the restoration and development activities may increase again air pollution unless strict preventive measures are kept. Since Croatia's independence (1992) several laws and ordinances concerning protection of air quality have come into force - Law on Environmental Protection, 1994; Law on Air Quality Protection (Law), 1995; Ordinance on Air Quality Recommended (RV) and Limit Values (LV), 1996; Ordinance on Assessment of Environmental Effects, 1997; Ordinance on Limitation of Pollutant Emissions from Stationary Sources. According to the Law, based on the comparison of measured values with RV or LV the air in an area is classified as clean (bellow RV), moderately polluted (between RV and LV), or heavily polluted (above LV). Depending on the air pollution category preventive, corrective or urgent control measures should be undertaken. Therefore it is important to be in course of achievements and developments in other European countries.
