Sažetak
The bacteria in the order Chlamydiales, family Chlamydiaceae infect a diverse array of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, as well as humans. These bacteria are widely distributed throughout the world. The Chlamydiaceae family includes two genera: Chlamydia and Chlamydophila. In veterinary medicine all species of the genus Chlamydophila have a significant zoonotic character. Two species of the genus Chlamydophila are known to cause illness in domestic ruminants: Chlamydophila pecorum (sheep, cattle, pigs and goats) and Chlamydophila abortus (sheep, goats and cattle). Outbreaks tend to occur because of different forms of immunodeficiency, simultaneous infections by other species of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, during pregnancy, in transport and overcrowded, unsanitary settings, as well as during the application of immunosuppressive drugs. Chlamydial infections in domestic ruminants can cause long lasting or „ latent- state” or intestinal chlamidiosis ; local infections are localized on epithel cells of mucosa. Inflammation of the intestine, conjunctival sac, as well as inflammation of mammary glands appears after chlamydiaemia. The inflammation also attacks the reproductive tract and causes epididimitis and orhitis. After spreading by blood trans cell membranes, the systematic infections localize in joints, lungs and brain, causing encephalomielitis. The diagnosis depends on the anamneses, clinical features, as well as on the serological and molecular examinations. In this paper, we will present new findings about the ethiology, diagnosis and therapy of chlamydiosis in cattle. The results presented are outcomes of the scientific project &laquo ; Chlamydiosis of Birds and Mammals&raquo ; which was conducted with the support of The Ministry of Science, Education and Sports.
