Sažetak
Background and purpose: SEPs enable the recognition of dysfunctions, determination of the damage locality and the possibility of continuous observation in development of pathological conditions in the nervous system for a long time. The syndrome of experimental diabetes leads to structural and functional disturbance of the central and peripheral nervous system. Previously we have developed the model of SEPs monitoring in rodents (rats and mice) finding them reproducible and confident thanking to noninvasive approach. In this work we report on the comparative investigation in rats and mice searching for the possible general correspondence in SEPs components. Materials and methods: Wistar female rats and mice of CBA/H Zgb and C3H/Zgb strains were used. A special computerized program for recording and analysis of SEPs was constructed. SEPs were monitored in different animals simultaneously but repeatedly in each animal, thanks to transient anaesthesia. Results: The measurements of SEPs in rats and mice in this way is possible and reproducible. SEPs consisted of early short tiny potentials (P3-N5-P8 waves) followed by later wave complex of higher amplitudes. The general shape of SEPs is not exclusively bound to single species. Good correspondence exists between the main seven characteristic components in healthy Wistar female rats and CBA mice, so the main peaks in both species are identifiable in spite of shortening the early latencies in mice and enlarging later amplitudes. Simultaneous recording between mid-life Wistar female rats and C3H mice point to significant enlargement of amplitudes of early and later brain waves in mice. Latency prolongation and amplitude differences in diabetic mice (CBA) versus control were observed. Conclusion: The confidently developed experimental model for the investigation of SEPs in rodents following the development of metabolic disturbances in the nervous system during the longer time period, as a part of experimental diabetes research, was done. SEPs in rats and mice were demonstrated to be correspondent and comparable regardless of age, sex, species and strain.
