Sažetak
Traditional hand weaving is gaining ground in Croatia. The aim of this paper is to analyze and show possibilities of the renewal of making unique hand woven fabrics marked by the rich tradition of Croatia. Part of Croatian handicrafts will be presented, contributing to the preservation of cultural identity. Handicrafts, especially hand weaving, had a therapeutic and healing effect of women under highly stressed circumstances during and after the war of independence, and now it is offering new possibilities in sense of self-gaining. Basic raw materials for hand weaving are domestic flax and wool. Due to economical reasons and fashion styles other raw materials are used to a smaller extent such as cotton, silk and synthetic fibers. It is well known that domestic wool alleviates rheumatic diseases and protects against strong winds in the coastal and continental regions of Croatia. Ethno motifs from all regions of Croatia are inexhaustible sources of inspiration. Valuable unique fabrics woven on hand looms indicate a rich and interesting variety of weaving techniques from various cultural, social and ethnical regions of Croatia. By harmonizing traditional and modern aspects very valuable and modern fabrics have been made that are more and more present in contemporary fashionable trends and in haute couture (high dressmaking).
