Sažetak
The emerging evidence regarding the association of cervical cancer and HPV infection over the past several years and increasing awareness of the importance of HPV testing in cervical cancer prevention resulted with introduction of several HPV diagnostic laboratory tests in health and scientific institutions in Croatia. According to our knowledge, the mentioned diagnostic procedures are available in four regional centers: Osijek, Rijeka, Split and Zagreb. The location of those laboratories provides satisfactory coverage of female population and makes HPV testing available in almost all parts of the country. Besides the detection, some laboratories are enabled to perform HPV typing tests also. The mentioned laboratories are differently equipped and they use different laboratory techniques but in general, it may be concluded that the technical conditions are suitable and up to date. From the laboratory point of view future activities should include the coordination and cooperation between these laboratories primarily with the purpose of introduction of proper quality control measures. The final results of these activities would be the improvement of diagnostic abilities of HPV testing laboratories in Croatia and further reduction of the appearance of cervical cancer and related mortality among Croatian women.
