Sažetak
The effect of silica fume, which emerges as a by-product in the manufacture of ferro-silicon, on the mechanical strength, the microstructure and sulphate resistance of Portland cement mortars, has been studied. Silica fume in concentration of 2, 5, 8, 11 and 15 wt% was added. The sulphate development in aggressive solutions of Na2SO4 and MgSO4 on the PC mortars containing different addition of silica fume has been investigated by measurement of the elastic modulus and by determination of mortars expansion. The hydration products, phase composition and microstructure of PC mortars exposed to sulphate corrosion have been determined by XRD, TEM and SEM. It has been established that the optimal amount of silica fume in mortars is about 5-8 wt%. The cement mortar containing 8 wt% of silica fume shows the highest compressive strength. Mortars containing more than 5 wt% of silica are characterised by a good sulphate resistance, and show lower expansion than a control mortar on sulphate-resisting cement basis. The test data confirm that silica fume proved to have superior pozzolanic qualities which makes it possible to save Portland cement. Use of silica fume is, therefore, both energy saving and resource utilizing.
