Sažetak
A two-cell PEMFC stack has been designed, assembled and tested. The two 10-cm2 cells are assembled in such a manner that the cathodes are facing outwards to ambient air, and the anodes are facing inward to the hydrogen compartment. The cells are electrically connected in series. After initial break-in period, the stack exhibited very stable performance in completely passive conditions at currents up to 0.1 A/cm2. The only control feature and system component is the hydrogen pressure regulator. Dead-end operation excludes hydrogen humidification, otherwise the anode compartment would flood with condensed water. Humidification of the membrane is accomplished by back-diffusion. Because of that, a very thin composite membrane has been selected. Expectedly, the stack was sensitive to any air movement, however it was not sensitive to orientation. The passive stack also has very good response to transient loads. The results of stack testing/characterization will be presented, as well as the result of the modeling efforts. This concept will be expanded to hot-swappable multi-stack configuration up to 20 W. Equipped with a metal hydride bottle it is intended for portable small power applications.
