Sažetak
With the development of automation tool monitoring is one of the basic elements of the work of flexible manufacturing systems. In view of that fact workers resposibility for cutting process monitoring is replaced with different sensing techniques for automatic monitoring application. In the paper, survey of direct and indirect sensing methods for tool wear and tool break estimation are shown. Tabulated list comparasion of different sensing methods by establishing preferences and defects is given, in aim to astablish a fact of reliability and economy of method application. The paper also suggests one method for tool edge wear sensing at turning process, based on the cutting force measurement by strain-gage technique. Experimental measurements have been practiced by variation of work and tool material. The method uses increase size of cutting force components estimation depending on edge wear size, to establish tool wear on the basis of initial cutting force size, or to establish cutting force limit in the moment of achieving the chosen wear criterion.
