The most interesting aspects of An Asia House and Wellcome Trust exhibition at the Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, London, from 13 October to 12 December 2004, which uses the Wellcome Library's artefacts to explore Asia's holistic approach to medicine, need to be sought out by the visitor, but they are there. Did you know, for example, that the Chinese first bathe their newborns on the third day of their life? Or that professional ear cleaners still offer their services in public places, cleaning the ear canals of willing passers-by with narrow wooden scoops?
