Sažetak
Working more than two decades on bioaugmentation on selected microorganisms, specific problems of adding microorganisms into existing systems were noticed. Existing wastewater treatment plants have stabile microbial populations and addition of exogenous microorganisms, usually ends them out of system. The first progress, which our team has done in direction to maintain externally cultivated microorganisms in the system, was to add mixed cultures instead of one microorganisms or one group of microorganisms (e.g. nitrifying microorganisms). Due to co-metabolism effect, mixed cultures could carried out complete biological reactions (carbon or nitrogen removal) or carried out the reactions, which endogenous microorganisms could not. That effect was even stronger when the mixture of autotrophs and heterotrophs were added. But, in certain cases, especially on industrial wastewater and unstable municipal plants, added mixed cultures could not also for a long time maintain in the system and we have confronted the new problem to design the biomass, which could maintain in the system under extreme conditions. After one year of a laboratory testing, two years of pilot plant testing and full-scale testing in pharmaceutical industries the result is ARGUS – Aerobic Granules Upgrade System.
