Sažetak
The topic of this thesis is the mother tongue in teacher talk. The aim of the thesis was to discover and analyze the use and the functions of the MT at the early level of foreign language teaching. The research was done on the corpus of 9 transcripts recorded in Croatian primary schools. The results show that teachers use MT in almost half of their utterances.The most frequent functions performed in the MT are eliciting and conducting. It is concluded that the use of the MT depends on the learners'age, lesson type and the teacher's style.
