Sažetak
Endemic nephropathy an unusual chronic kidney disease found in several villages in the Sava River valley of eastern Croatia, is of unknown causative agents (Čeović, 1996.). One hypothesis suggests that the presence of Fusarium spp. on corn in the region are producing mycotoxins that may contribute to this disease (Edrington, 1995.). We collected corn samples from 14 villages in the endemic region, one being an uninfected control from the village of Klakar. The main Fusarium species found was Fusarium moniliforme var. subglutinans and then F. moniliforme. The results of our investigation is presented along with data associated with the frequency of kidney disease, in order to show any correlation between the two. Further study will give an analysis of mycotoxins being produced.
