Sažetak
When we talk about criminal law, we have in mind a system of legal provisions that protect the basic values of a society. It achieves this by defining conduct that threatens or violates these values as criminal offences and prescribing punishments for perpetrators of criminal offences. The most important formal legal source of the criminal law in Croatia is the Criminal Code. It was enacted by the Croatian Parliament on September 19, 1997 and has been in force since January 1998. In the meantime, the Criminal Code has been amended several times. The Croatian Criminal Code like other continental European criminal codes, consists of two parts: General Provisions and Special Provisions. The General Provisions of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Croatia contain fundamental provisions outlining the most important criminal principles. These provisions have general meaning and concern all criminal offences. The Special Provisions of the Croatian Criminal Code define criminal offences by prescribing their legal descriptions and criminal sanctions and linking them in a coherent system.
