Sažetak
The activity concentrations of 137Cs and naturally occurring 7Be were measured in air and fallout in the city of Zagreb for the post -Chernobyl period (1986-2004), as a part of an extended monitoring programme of radioactive contamination of human environment in Croatia performed by the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health. The highest 137Cs activity concentrations in the observed period were recorded in May 1986, being 6200 Bqm-2 for the surface deposit by fallout and 0.85 Bqm-3 in air. Such high values could be attributed to the second of the three radioactive plumes originating from the Chernobyl reactor, which edge passed over Northwest Croatia. However, these values were exponentially decreasing ever since the Chernobyl accident, as is expected for natural removal and radioactive decay since there were no new caesium releases from either from nuclear facilities or weapons testing. In 2004, average 137Cs activity concentration in air was 0.02 Bqm-3, while total 137Cs surface deposit by fallout was 2.07 Bqm-2. By fitting the measured 137Cs activity concentrations to the theoretical curve was estimated the mean residence time of 137Cs in air and fallout. Through the post-Chernobyl period, the mean annual deposition fluxes of 7Be were about 250 Bqm-2, while the mean 7Be activity concentration in the air was about 5.4 ×10-3 Bqm-3. High 7Be activity concentratio ns in air could be generally related to the little solar activity, while low 7Be activity concentrations in air are related to the high solar activity, like in the period 1989– 1991. Using the data on 137Cs and 7Be activity concentrations in air and fallout were estimated their respective deposition velocities, that were find not to differ from the values observed elsewhere.
