Sažetak
Non destructive testings are often used in manufacturing industry for flaws characterization and material defects. One of the techniques is the use of nuclear gauges, that, as radiation sources, may initial adverse health effects. The aim of the study was to estimate genome sensitivity in an occupationally exposed group of professional that use Americium 241-Beryllium neutron emitter for welding control. The exposed group comprised 42 male subjects, who were under physical dosimetric control. One-year cumulative doses measured by film dosimeters were below 20 mSv. The control group of 42 subjects matched the exposed group in sex, age and smoking-habits. To assess and compare occupationally induced DNA damage, we used the chromosomal aberration assay (per 200 cells) and cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus assay (per 1000 cells) in peripheral blood lymphocytes. The results showed an increased number of chromosomal breaks and acentrics in all exposed groups, with no correlation to age, dose, year of exposure or smoking. Micronucleus frequency was also higher in all exposed groups and in significant association with years of exposure and smoking.
