Sažetak
AIM. Relationships are developed and modulated by conscious and unconscious attitudes. The aim of this paper was, therefore, to define conscious and unconscious attitudes of nurses at patients at the Gynecology Clinic, Clinical Hospital center Rijeka towards patients and disease that can exert positive or negative influence on the relations of patients towards their disease and treatment process. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Questionnaire of conscious and unconscious attitudes towards patients/medical staff and Semantic differential of unconscious attitudes were used to test 31 patients that had been subjected to surgery due to genital malignancies as well as all the nurses (N=32) that had been working with these patients. RESULTS. Statistically significant results that had been obtained in the Questionnaire of conscious attitudes showed that nurses felt they needed to put more effort when working with these patients (p<0.001). At the same time, patients were able to realize that effort (p<0.04), appreciate it (p<0.04), while their need towards more time devoted by the nurses was neither satisfactory nor unsatisfactory. These results indicated that liaison psychiatry would be useful at the Clinic. The analysis of semantic differential provided the factors of evaluation, potency and activation. Pearson's correlation and Sperman's coefficient of correlation between factors of evaluation, potency and activation showed statistically negative correlation of evaluation and potency for the patients (p<0.01). Namely, the more information patients had about their disease, less severe were their feelings about it and vice versa. In nurses, positive correlation between factors of evaluation and potency (p<0.004) was found, significant positive correlation between potency and activation (p<0.034) and statistically marginal correlation of evaluation and activation. Thos finding indicated that the more insight in patient's state nurses had, they considered him more seriously ill and became more involved in treatment. Nurses produced statistically significant better evaluation of patient's disease than patients themselves (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION. The results of this study allow the conclusion about the necessity of more information for patients about their disease, because better insight in the disease reduces the feeling of gravity of the disease and enables better participation of a patient in treatment.
