Sažetak
A rare but important cause of death in patients with epilepsy is epilepsy-related death, which includes status epilepticus (SE), death after a single seizure, accidents and sudden unexpected death (SUD). The cause of SUD is unknown ; it is probably related to seizure, hypoxia or cardiac arrhythmias. The aim of our study was to analiyse the mortality of epileptic patients who were admitted at hospital in epileptic status. We analysed 26 patients, aged 20-83 ; 14 (54%) male and 12 (46%) female. In 92% SE was the consequence of therapy absence in patients with long term epilepsy, while in 8% it was the first sign of epilepsy. SE was successfully treated in 21 patients (81%). The rest of 5 (19%) patients did not survive. Two of them where elderly patients ; one had epilepsy as a result of cerebrovascular disease and the other as a result of injury of the brain. They died with the diagnostic of cardio-respiratory decompensation. Three patients died suddenly and unexpectelly when the seizures ceased (interictal phase of epilepsy). Those patients were younger and suffered from primary generalised seizures in idiopathic epilepsy.
