Sažetak
Peptidoglycan fragments in mammals originate from degradation of bacterial peptidoglycans. The fragments exhibit immunomodulating activity, and an influence on sleep regulation. Specific antibodies could be induced by peptidoglycan fragments of higher molecular mass and have been detected in the sera of patienrts with bacterial infections. Several sensitive immunoassays have been established for the detection of peptidoglycans or specific antibodies in mammalian sera. Consideration is given to methods for isolating, purifying and characterizing PG's of low mol. wt., including HPLC and FAB-MS.
