Sažetak
Scientific interest in the diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia has increased since several species of the genus have been associated with the production of domoic acid, a neurotoxic amino acid responsible for Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP). This toxicity has arise considerable interest since sporadic intense proliferation of these diatoms has resulted in toxin accumulation through food chains impacting marine organisms, humans and ultimately ecosystems and economy. The difficulty in monitoring these diatoms is identification at the species level that recently relies on ultra structural features evidenced only on cleaned frustules observed with an electron microscope. Chain-forming, planktonic Pseudo-nitzschia is common constituent of the oceanic and neritic plankton worldwide as well as the Adriatic Sea. However, species composition of Pseudo-nitzschia in the Adriatic Sea is not known. The presented research provided information on spatial and temporal distribution of Pseudo-nitzschia in the middle reach of the Zrmanja Estuary (in the Novigrad Sea) during 1998-2004. Pseudo-nitzschia was dominant diatom in the phytoplankton community with maximum abundance of 1.3 106 cells L-1. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and BIO-ENV submodul of the program package PRIMER with Sperman’ s correlation analysis was performed to address the effect of environmental conditions to distribution (development) of this diatom. Correlation matrix was calculated using Statistica 6.0 Software. Temperature and orthophosphates were the main factors determining the diatom abundance (development). Maximum abundance was usually found in winter - spring period. The positive significant correlation between Pseudo-nitzschia and concentration of orthophosphates (r=0.3749, p=0.001) as well as negative significant correlation with temperature (r=-0.3298, p=0.005), indicated preferment impact of early spring eutrophic conditions to the development of the diatom. Identification to species level under the light microscope was not possible. The use of TEM (FEI Morgagni 268D) provided evidence of the first record of Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha, in the Zrmanja Estuary. The forthcoming research will show how many species of Pseudo-nitzschia are present in the Adriatic Sea.
