Sažetak
Preparturient dairy cows are at high risk of metabolic and reproductive disorders. A major role in these events plays a negative energy balance (NEB) which is often the cause of oxidative stress development. There are a number of mechanisms which prevent oxidative damage. Serum paraoxonase, a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated enzyme, possesses an antioxidative effect based on the hydrolysis of lipid hydroperoxides generated on low density lipoproteins (LDL) during the oxidative events. In 76 pregnant lactating Holstein dairy cows and in 26 pregnant Holstein dairy cows in the dry period, the serum paraoxonase activity was determined by the hydrolysing of paraoxon in order to assess the involvement of paraoxonase in oxidative and metabolic events during late pregnacy. To obtain an insight in metabolic changes the serum triglyceride, cholesterol, HDL- and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were determined as well. A significantly higher serum triglyceride concentration was observed in dry cows compared to lactating cows. The cholesterol, HDL- and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower in dry cows than in the lactating ones. Paraoxonase activity was significantly lower in dry cows than in those lactating. HDL-standardized paraoxonase activity was not different between the two investigated groups. It seems that the decreasing of the HDL could be one of the causes for reduced paraoxonase activity considering the role of HDL as a carrier of most paraoxonase molecules in the blood. A decreased serum paraoxonase activity could lead to the reduction of the antioxidative protection in dry cows.
