Sažetak
Mixing processes that occur in natural coastal aquatic environments are representing the phenomenon that is commonly analysed on macroscopic level for engineering purposes. As in most engineering applications the resolution of mathematical model describing the flow of water doesn't enable the explicit description of processes occurring at sub-grid scale it is necessary to perform parameterisation of such processes or to model them separately. (turbulent transport e.g.). Those processes are not only important for macroscopic flow description but for description of mixing process itself, occurring between two fluids of different characteristics (sea water of different density, sea and waste water e.g.). This paper presents some preliminary results obtained by 3-D hydrodynamic model applied to situation where water is moved by density gradient currents and wind force. One situation recorded in Rijeka Bay is briefly described and qualitative comparison between modelled results and experimental data is presented. Conclusions regarding applicability of eddy viscosity model based on Smagorinsky's formulation of turbulent viscosity were drawn.
