Sažetak
The major environmental project actually in course in the Republic of Croatia - Split/Solin Municipal Environmental Infrastructural Project, comprises construction of the most important sewerage system facilities in the towns of Split and Solin, including the long submarine outfall off the Stobrec Bay. This paper presents some selected results and methodology of the submarine outfall length optimization which resulted in the updated proposal to be implemented in the near future. Optimum submarine discharge location proposal relies on synergy effect between expected WWTP operating standards and favourable deep sea discharge conditions, and is considered to be techno-economically sound one, sufficient to cope with needs in the next foreseeable period. Although the proposal is supported by 3-D mathematical modelling results and measured oceanographic data, its validity is still to be proven by monitoring of the sea water quality. However, it can be claimed with high degree of certainty that the “ worst case scenario” approach in this particular case would considerably worsen the outfall hydraulic operating conditions and would jeopardize its correct operation without visible environmental benefits.
