Sažetak
The Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters, located at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, officially opened its doors on 9 September 1884. Its history begins, however, several decades earlier, when Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer first started to collecting works of art. While the Gallery and its collection changed in many ways during the course of its more than 100 years of existence, its identity as a home for Europe's old masters was determined quite early with Strossmayer's multi-dimensional contribution. In establishing and supporting an institution to house, exhibit, and facilitate the study of these works, Strossmayer had left an indelible mark on Croatian culture. Article is devided in several chapters: "Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer", "The Academy of Sciences and Arts", "The University of Zagreb", "Đakovo Cathedral", "Collecting Works of Art", "Construction of the Academy Palace", "The Gallery's Grand Opening", "The Founding of Art History Studies", "The Growth of the Gallery's Inventory, Permanent Displays, and Catalogs, 1884-1925", "Reconstucting the Gallery, 1925-1926", "From the Gallery's Reconstruction to World War II", "From World War II to the Present Day".
