Sažetak
Municipal and similar types of waste from the wider Zagreb area (the capital of Croatia) have been deposited at the Jakuševec landfill since as far back as 1965. Up until the beginning of this century waste was disposed of in unsanitary manner. The need for remediation was recognized back in the 1980s but the actual remediation did not start until 1996, ending in September 2003. The remediation was carried out by relocating the entire existing waste, approx 7.3 million m3 of it, onto cells with the bottom liner and leachate collection system placed at the base. The entire Jakuševec landfill remediation has included, along with the construction of the landfill body itself, the construction of a number of service facilities alongside the landfill. Furthermore, monitoring is systematically carried out at the landfill in order to protect the health of people at the landfill and in its surroundings, as well as the environment.
