Sažetak
Farmer field school (FFS) is basically a community-based hands-on practically oriented field study programme. The methods emphasise observations, discussion, analysis, decision making, presentation and appropiate action. FFS were originally developed as an extension vechicle for promoting integrated pest management (IPM) among rice farmers in Asia. The first FFS were established in 1989 in central Java. The programme now trains more then 100.000 farmers per year in season-long field schools. At present IPPM (Integrated Production and Pest Management)-FFS programmes have been established in over 40 countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America. Basic principle of FFS is that FFS school is without walls. The school is meant to provide farmers with the analytical tools that will enable them to analyse their own production practices and identify possible location and situation specific solutions to problems they face. Within the frame of FAO project "Participatory approach in IPM for WCR" in countries infested by WCR, based on methodology of FFS, groups of farmers were working together. The main goal of the study was to empowered farmers by giving them analytical tools for better understanding Western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) as a new pest of corn in their fields. Since the infestation level among the countries is different, groups of farmers were working in different conditions and with different objectives. In Bulgaria (5 groups), Bosnia and Herzegovina (3 groups) and Slovakia (2 groups) the objectives were to teach farmers about pest identification, monitoring system and pest biology. In Hungary 10 farmers at 3 training location met twice per week from May to September. Farmers were collecting the data about plant lodging, root damage, silk damage and population density. Through field work farmers were trained on corn phenology, WCR biology and risk assessment. In Croatia 10 farmers met monthly, and 3 of them twice per week. On different cropping systems (continuous corn, corn after wheat, continuous corn seed treated with insecticides) they have been observed larval density, root damage and adult density on Pherocon AM traps. In Yugoslavia 30 farmers at 2 localities met regularly, they were practicing risk assessment using different techniques (Pherocon AM traps and the whole plant count technique). All obtained results were discussed among the group. Additionally, facilitator and three farmers from each county met in Mezohegyes, Hungary, where the farmers from different countries discussed about pest importance and corn growing technology in their countries. The first year results showed that is possible to improve farmers ability for facing with the new very important pest using FFS methodology. Participatory approach was showed as good management tool for WCR, but the work should be continued because importance of WCR as a corn pest in all infested countries.
