Sažetak
Elaboration and application of a method of monitoring heavy metals in forest ecosystems was commenced in the Forest Research Institute, Jastrebarsko, as early as 1988, and first carried out in 1992. The method was used for the investigation of a forest community of Peduncled Oak and Common Hornbeam (Carpino betuli-Quercetum roboris Anić 1956 ex. Rauš 1969) in Northest Croatia. A total number of 9 plots were established in the area of Northwest Croatia. Soil profiles were dug out on the surface within the established plot, in sub-plots, 60 x 60 m. Samples were taken from genetic horizons for standard chemical and physical analyses. Small plastic zero tension lysimeters was incorporated into each soil profile beneath the humus layer for measuring seepage water (percolate) in order to determine its quantity and quality. Samples of liquid for analysis were taken after soil stabilisation above the lysimeters, i.e. after one to two years. Until then the liquid collected in the containes had ben emptied for cleaning and maintenance the lysimeter vessels. For sampling the lysimeter liquid was drawn from the vessels by a special pump and stored in small PVC bottles for malyses. All the instruments and vessels, prior to setting up on the plots, were rinsed with 10% nitric acid, and several times with re-distilled water. Sampling of liquids was carried out at monthly. Heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn and Cd) were determined in samples. All soil found belong to the class of hydro-morphologic soil with the main type of pseudogley (planosol) level terrains. Concentration of lead and cadmium in some samples in the lysimeters at a depth of 10 cm is increased and according to drinking water standards.
