Sažetak
Compensatory growth of adrenal cortex is mediated through cateholaminergic nerves /Ann Ny Acad Sci 512 ; 449, 1987). In experiments presented we identified the receptor responsible for this phenomenon. Mature rats with unilateral adrenalectomy were treated with a) dopamine receptor antagonist (haloperidol 10 mg/kg) ; b) alpha-adrenergic antagnost (prazosin 4 mg/kg) ; c)beta-adrenergic antagonist (propranolol 1 mg/kg, 5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg ; atenolol 1 mg/kg, 5 mg/kg ; sotalol 5 mg/kg). Ten days after unilateral adrenalectoy the rats were sacrisified. Only, beta-adrenergic antagnoist prevented compensatory adrenal growth in the same extent as splanchnectomy. In another type of experiments, rats underwent unilateral splancnectomy and chronic treatment with atenolol (5 mg/kg). Unilateral splanchnectoy induced contralateral adrenal growth that was prevented by atenolol, as observed 10 days after operation. To investigate the involvement of stress reaction in adrenal hypertrophy rats were submitted to spinal cored transection at Th-10 level and were chronically treated with atenolol. Stress induced bilateral adrenal enlargement that couldn't be prevented with atenolol. This indicates that: a) compensatory adrenal growth is mediated through adrenergic splanhnic innervation ; b) peripheral adrenergic receptors, probably of beta-1 subtype, are involved in this process ; c) the mechanisms of compensatory adrenal growth are different from the mechanisms involved in stress induced adrenal hypertrophy.
