Sažetak
In contemporary finance, a clearer differentiation between small and large institutions is becoming more and more visible. It is reflected in the growth in number of large banking groups, and on the other side, in decrease in number and disappearance of smaller banks. Since small banks play an important role on local and regional markets, modern science is paying an increased attention to their future and to the consequences of these structural changes. The paper points to the causes of a decrease in number of small banks in developed and transition countries, and analyses the consequences that these changes bring into the financial sector and entire national economy. Based on the comparative analysis of performance indicators of banks, their balance sheet structure according to their size, the paper analyses the importance of small banks on the market and their future prospects.
