Sažetak
Petroleum industry is considered to be one of the main environmental polluters. During exploration, well stimulation and oil and gas production a certain amount of reservoir brine, solids and other wastes are produced. By injecting that waste into suitable underground geological formations, where it primary came from, petroleum industry waste is safely removed from human biosphere. For even more than half of the century the implementation of this kind of waste disposal technology has been practised in the developed countries of the world, such as the USA, Norway, Great Britain, Canada and Germany. Petroleum industry waste disposal by injection into deep geological structures has started in Croatia last year. At this moment, petroleum industry waste is in Croatia injected just at one oil field, but there are several project that consider wells and geological structures suitable for disposal of this kind of waste. Due to high environmental standards, introduced over the past decades, the disposal of waste produced during oil and gas exploration and production has become, along with the limitations of world oil and gas resources, its disproportional global distribution and costs of production, one of the limiting factors. Its impact on the future development of the petroleum industry, and industry in general, is predicted to be even greater.
