Sažetak
Recent years have seen the emphasis of the relationship between innovation, competitiveness and economic growth. The issue of national innovative capacity (NIC), i.e. the ability of a country to produce and commercialise a long-term flow of innovative technology comes into focus. Moreover, development of knowledge-based economy as a key policy goal of economic restructuring and social transformation in Europe can be measured by indicators generated through European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) and Community Innovation Survey (CIS). These instruments enable cross-country comparisons of innovative activities at the enterprise level, as well as of the environments in which business innovation takes place. The paper utilises the results of the first CIS undertaken in Croatia and other available EIS indicators to assess the extent, characteristics and economic implications of innovation activities in Croatian enterprises. On the basis of these findings, the implications for the development of a more effective innovation policy are drawn.
