Sažetak
We studied the annual activity of noble crayfish (Astacus astacus). The study was conducted at three sites along the Orljava River, in the continental part of Croatia. Each site represents the typical characteristics of the upper, middle and lower section of the river (5, 30 and 50 km from the spring, respectively). The presented results were collected between September 2003 and September 2004. Crayfish were captured once a month, during two nights, with baited LiNi and hand made traps that were left in the water overnight. Each individual was sexed and some morphological and physiological characteristics were measured and recorded. Crayfish number fluctuated during the year and their activity was positively correlated with the water temperature. The longest male was 13.69 cm and the longest female was 11.44 cm. We found Branchiobdella parasita and B. pentodonta on great number of crayfish, and also few individuals with burn spot disease. The main injuries that were encountered included claw, limb and antenna loss. The number of crayfish caught within the two lower sites in September 2004 was dramatically smaller then the year before, and the research of this phenomenon will be continued in the near future.
