Sažetak
Societies differ in how they manage to protect its children. In Croatia problem of maltreatment and neglect of children entered public discussion decade ago and this led to an increase of public awareness as well as the number of cases disclosed. Incidence of maltreatment has also risen in the light of great number of societal risk factors that accompany the occurrence of family violence. Research of child maltreatment prevalence conducted in Croatia reveals statistics similar to ones in other countries. This circumstances encountered in Croatia led to the establishment of institution which would provide professional support to maltreated children. At the close of 2002 first such institution in this region of Europe opened its door: the Center for Child Protection. Aim of this study is to supply an overview of functioning of the Center and highlight problems encountered and solutions provided by the experts. Work of the Center will first be presented through its organizational structure: diagnostics and treatment work, education, team work, research and public work. The second part will cover the analysis of cases ; the results are based on statistical analysis of sample of children (N = 1876), who were then clients of the Center.In conclusion we’ ll try to make a contribution towards better understanding of conditions in which this first such institution in Croatia operated, and summarize what has been learned: about resolving problems related to the system, organization of work and to specific children issues, about children and their parents who are the clients of the Center and about benefits of the multidisciplinary approach in work with the children.
