Sažetak
This survey paper discusses the problem of approximating topological spaces by polyhedra using various techniques based on inverse systems. It focuses on some of the author's contributions obtained over a period of forty five years. In particular, the paper lists properties preserved under inverse limits and states theorems concerning the representation of compact Hausdorff spaces as limits of inverse systems of compact polyhedra with desired additional properties. It also describes resolutions and approximate resolutions, tools developed by the author to handle successfully non-compact situations.
