Sažetak
Introduction: P300 component of auditory evoked potential changes the amplitude and latency due to the disorders in cognitive processes. An effective medication presents a great advantage if it also aggreviates minimally or not at all the cognitive functions, and along with that the quality of a patient's life. The effect of lamotrigin on cognitive functions was studied here. Materials and methods: Patients using psycholeptics, psychoanaleptics, other antiepileptics and all the medications known for their disturbing of the cognitive functions as well as the patients with mental retardation and symptomatologic epilepsy were excluded from this study. The study of the evoked potential (CEP) on the auditory oddbaal paradigm was done on the MedelecSynergy-Oxford Instruments device. Latencies and amplitudes of the N1, P2, N2, P3a and P3b waves of the evoked responses were measured at the beginning, and after six months of the treatment with medication as monotherapy. Results: Preliminary results comprise the treatment of the nine patients, five male and four female. The average age of the subjects was 32± ; ; ; 3.2 years. During six months treatment with lamictal the latency of all the waves was reduced as well as the difference between P3a- P3b. The amplitudes N1-P2 and P2-N2 decreased, but the amplitude N2-P3b increased. Conclusion: Preliminary results showed that lamictal had no negative effect on the cognitive functions of the patients, and further research will show whether it really has a protective effect on the cognition.
