Sažetak
The Seventh International Drainage Symposium continued the 33 year history of ASAE to provide a forum for communication between science, industry, and practice in the areas of agricultural drainage and water table management. Symposia have been held at 5 to 6 year intervals since the first Drainage Symposium in 1965. Early symposia focused on drainage practices, materials, and equipment. Major milestones of the period included development of laser grade control, corrugated plastic tubing, and the drain tubing plow. Refinement of these technologies was a major focus through the Fourth Symposium. As computer technology became a common research tool during the seventies, development of simulation models opened the door for analysis of drainage system design and performance on a day to day basis in response to crop needs and variable weather. The seventies were also accompanied by a dramatic shift in the perception of drainage. Drainage became viewed as iniquitous to the environment – responsible for the loss of wetlands and the degradation of surface water quality especially near intensive agricultural areas. The trend towards increased emphasis on water quality was reflected in proceedings of the Third Symposium in 1977.
