Sažetak
Like the other former socialistic countries from Central and Eastern Europe at the beginning of 1990's, Croatia began transformation towards a market economy. Croatia agriculture passed through numerous transitional difficulties (loss of tradition markets, poorly organized market, failure in the privatization of state-owned land, technological and educational problems, producer insolvency, export-import deficit etc.). The aim of this paper is to explore vegetable market chain in Eastern Croatia in order to identify problems, the interaction between market subjects and strategies for supply chain improvement. Surveys were conducted using phone interview among three market subjects: the producers, hypermarkets (as the place where the vegetables are most frequently purchased) and consumers of vegetables. As hypermarkets need a continuous supply of fresh vegetables, small farmers have had to cooperate. Nevertheless, the biggest problem from their point of view is slow transfer of money and the low prices hypermarkets pay. Hypermarkets demand: good quality vegetables, continuous supply and a producer declaration. Hypermarkets in Croatia focuse on domestic products except during off- season. Consumers pay attention to: quality, price and the producer. Based on the survey results, it is concluded that the vegetable market is getting better with a development of hypermarkets. The producers are certain that their products will be sold and paid for and simultaneously, consumers are happier to buy domestic vegetables. Hypermarkets are in better position today because they are purchasing from cooperative producers rather than individual producers.
