The acitivity of sperm superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn SOD)is not fully elucidated in asthenozoospermia, characterized by normal spermatozoa concnetrastion but with reduced motility. Te aim of this study was to evaluate the SOD-like activity in astheno-and normozoospermia. SOD like activity was determined in two percoll fractions of 18 normozoospermic and 12 asthenozoospermic subjects. In vitro effect of zinc was assessed on unfractionated spermatozoa of 27 normo-and 18 asthenozoospermic men. SOD-like activity was measured using the RanSod test. SOD-like activity was significantly elevated in low density Percoll fraction of asthenozoospermic samples when compared to normozoospermic samples. A nonsignificant increase was found in spermatozoa of high density Percoll fraction. The incubation of sperm suspension (37 0C, 30 min, n=14) with increasing zinc concnetration (0.1-0.3 mM/l) was less pronounced in asthenozoospermic than in normozoospermic samples. Results from this study indicated asthenozoopsermia to be associated with both an increased sperm SOD-like activity and its stronger resistance to the inhibitory effect of zinc, which might be relevant for the sperm function.
