Sažetak
Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites with particular mechanism to invade and reproduce in the infected cell. Most species are able to induce the formation of visible xenomas virtually in all organs. The composition and location of xenomas is species-specific. During a parasitological examination of Adriatic cage-reared young tuna, small and whitish xenomas were observed and isolated from the intestinal mucosa. Because of a strong resemblance with didymozoid cysts, xenomas were ruptured and only fresh and stained smears were prepared, thus an appropriate determination of a species was not done at this stage. Knowing the elevated potential pathogenicity of this parasitic group in wild and aquaculture fish populations and highly priced reared tuna where microsporidian infections were never reported before, it is important to continue with the further research.
