Sažetak
Development of navigation has opened a series of issues which should meet the requirements of users for the purpose of navigational safety. Together with nautical chart, Pilot or Sailing Directions is essential navigational aid which recommends the passage of a vessel through a difficult navigational area. In 1999 the new edition of Pilot (“ Peljar I – Jadransko more istočna obala” ) of eastern part of the Adriatic Sea was published by the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia. The Pilot is A4 in size, printed in 4 colours and consists of four parts: introduction, general informations of the eastern part of the Adriatic Sea, coastline description and appendix. The Pilot contains general data about the Adriatic Sea, sailing directions, basic instruction on the choice of the optimal navigational route, detailed description of ports, bays, channels, anchorages, shelters, as well as prevailing meteorological and oceanographic conditions. Mariners can also find detailed instructions for accessing and sailing into the port, staying and leaving the port, pilotage as well as informations about port services. This paper presents the purpose and design of the new edition of Pilot laying emphasis on a new selection and modern visualization of information. One of the most important news in production of Pilot is computer supported technique in compilation of charts, plans and other figures in this publication, which makes possible high cartographic quality and visualisation of huge amount of data. For these purposes graphical software applications for cartographic editing and desktop publishing, such as FreeHand 8 and Quark have been used. This software is a very simple and economical final issue of technological process for production of cartographic presentations in such kind of publication.
