Aim To establish and analyze the causes of death of employed seafarers from Maritime-littoral County in Croatia and gain important information for organizing health education for this population or occupational health services with protective measures. Methods A retrospective longitudinal study of mortality based on official mortality data in Maritime-littoral County for the period 1995-2003. Results Total of 102 deaths was registered in that period. Neoplasm caused majority of deaths 32.4%, where 34% of cases was lung cancer. Second major component with 29.4% were injuries, majority of which are suicides. Deaths with unknown cause account for 28.4% of total deaths because these people died outside Croatia. 69.6% of seafarers died between age 40 and 59. Conclusions Majority of deaths was caused by diseases linked to lifestyle factors such as smoking, and a hazardous nature of their occupation such as injuries. Therefore, Priority for action should be health education for changing lifestyle and injury prevention.
