Sažetak
The shallow northern Adriatic ecosystem (<50m depth) is very sensitive to eutrophication due to the combined influence of fresh water nutrients input (mainly from the Po river), water column stratification and circulation patterns, as modified by meteorological changes (see Degobbis et al., 2000, and Poulain et al., 2001 for review and cited references). Marked hypoxia (oxygen saturation ratio <30 %) and even anoxia events have often been observed in the bottom layer of extended areas from September to November in years of excess primary production during spring (Degobbis et al., 2000). During the autumn of 2004 near-anoxia occurred in bottom layers of the northern Adriatic (oxygen saturation ratio 15-30 %). The mechanism of this event was studied through analysis of the Po river discharge rate and the geostrophic circulation in the region.
