Mixtures of CuO and Fe3O4 with different Cu:Fe atomic ratios were homogenized by ball-milling, sintered and then heated to 1373 K in air. The first appearance of the copper ferrospinel (CS) phase was observed with XRD for the atomic ratio Cu:Fe=1:99 and with Mössbauer spectroscopy for the atomic ratio Cu:Fe=1:29. The amount of the CS phase gradually increased in the samples with increasing CuO content in the starting oxide mixtures. For the atomic ratio Cu:Fe=1:2, the RT Mössbauer spectrum was considered as the superposition of two sextets (M1=470 and M2=432 kOe) and the doublet (dFe=0.39, D=0.60 and G=0.30 mm s-1) corresponding to the CS phase and CuFeO2 (delafossite). The formation of oxide phases in the system Cu-Fe-O and their Mössbauer spectra were compared with the corresponding data about copper ferrospinels available in the literature.
