Sažetak
Many viruses, cyanophytes, bacteria, algae, protozoans and fungi are pathogenic or potentially toxic organisms in seawater. They are meant to list those organisms that may be of concern in seawater, outline their life cycles, habitats, effects, sources and mechanisms of spread. Most species of microalgae are not harmful and serve as the energy producers at the base of the food web, without which most life as we know it on this planet would not exist. The frequency, numbers and ecology of toxic microalgae species, and their impact on natural resources and public health in South Adriatic (Croatia) has been previously investigated (Car and Jasprica 2004). Impact other marine organisms, (e.g. planktonic invertebrates: meduseae, pteropods) on the public health, has not been investigated in South Adriatic. Planktonic marine invertebrates were studied throughout 15-years period in South Adriatic. Effects of these organisms on the swimmers and divers were discussed. Standard oceanographic methods were applied (Batistić et al. 2004). Seabather's eruption (SBE) is a highly pruritic dermatosis affecting swimmers and divers in marine waters. Its cause has been attributed to various organisms but usually to the different species of medusae and pteropods. Specific characteristic of pteropod Cresies acicula (“ Planktonic snail” , 0.1-1.0 cm long) is periodically massive occurring (“ explosion of population” ). Extremely high abundance of C. acicula (more than 50 ind. L-1) was noted in August 1990 in South Adriatic. Episodes of SBE in the South Adriatic were evaluated during the season of high tourism. Accurate diagnosis will allow appropriate treatment, education regarding prevention, and avoidance of unnecessary diagnostic tests.
