Sažetak
The basic manufacturing procedures have been presented briefly as well as the metal foam properties, the new cellular materials not yet used sufficiently in practice. The most widely used are the aluminium foams due to the following properties: very good insulation (thermal insulation and sound absorption), low density (mass), high specific rigidity in sandwich constructions, very good impact damping, corrosion resistance, non-flammability, very good recyclability, etc. The properties of aluminium foams have been compared with wood and polymeric foams. The comparison has shown that the only and the greatest drawback of the foams is their currently still relatively high price, due to their low usage at the moment. Some possibilities of applying metal foams include: parts for automotive industry, railways and other vehicles and transport means – elements for improvement of stiffness and reduction of the bending of hollow elements, parts for impact absorption ; in civil engineering: stiff core for the doors, ceilings, wall panels, panels for sound absorption and thermal insulators etc. The potential application of metal foams in shipbuilding can be the manufacturing of numerous bulkheads, deck elements and also for lining of tanks that contain flammable and explosive media. The use of metal foams results in the reduction of the mass of the ship above the waterline thus significantly increasing its stability.
